The play area at the Liermolen is divided into zones. Next to the animal meadow you will find the play pump. Closer to the mill you will see "Korensporen", an obstacle course with step logs, balance beams, stairs and a zigzag. Later there will be a play zone for the little ones.
When redesigning the play area, we chose elements that tie in with the technical and historical story of a farm and mill site. A pump, and water in general, offers many opportunities for play and the possibility to tell the story about water supply.
Because water is precious, it is used as well as possible:
1. The rainwater that falls on the roof of the bakehouse is collected in a rainwater well.
2. On top of the well we placed a millstone with a pump on it. Via old feeding troughs, the water ends up in a drinking trough, where it serves as drinking water for the goats.
3. The rest of the precious water infiltrates into the soil. This keeps the soil wet for longer during dry periods.
Wrap it up!
In the past, fetching water from the village pump was a difficult task. Yet it could also be a pleasant place, because you always met someone at the pump to have a chat with. To prevent the pump from freezing in the winter, they were often artfully wrapped in the insulation material par excellence: straw.
What are you waiting for?! Get pumping!
This play pump was built with the support of CERA.
This obstacle course is designed so that an entire primary school class can play on it at the same time. The trunks made from Robinia are sculpted and bundled like sheaves of grain that are drying in the field after the harvest.
The grain and the millstones refer to the historic water mill. The grain stalks are gigantic in size so that the children are like mice finding their way through the grain.
